Why it works
The benefits of deep tissue massage
Chronic pain relief
Sustained, targeted pressure breaks down adhesions and scar tissue in overworked muscles, addressing the root cause of recurring pain rather than masking it.
Improved posture
Long-held postural tension in the neck, shoulders and back responds well to deep tissue work, helping your body find its natural alignment.
Reduced muscle stiffness
By increasing blood flow and releasing fascial restrictions, deep tissue massage restores the ease of movement that tension has been stealing.
Stress & cortisol reduction
Despite the intensity, deep tissue massage activates the parasympathetic nervous system, many clients leave feeling profoundly calm as well as physically lighter.
The experience
What to expect
- 1
Paul will spend a few minutes discussing your areas of concern, medical history and pressure preferences before beginning.
- 2
Work starts more gently to warm the tissue, gradually moving into deeper, sustained strokes and targeted pressure on specific muscles.
- 3
You may feel some discomfort in areas of acute tension, Paul uses breath cues and real-time feedback to ensure the pressure is always productive, never painful.
- 4
You'll be draped throughout; only the area being worked is uncovered. You remain in control at all times.
- 5
Post-session, some mild soreness in the 24–48 hours following is normal and a sign the tissue has been worked effectively.

Common questions
Deep Tissue Massage: FAQ
Is deep tissue massage painful?+
It shouldn't be. There's a productive intensity, a 'good hurt', but deep tissue work done well should never leave you wincing or bracing. Paul uses real-time feedback throughout and adjusts pressure accordingly. If something doesn't feel right, say so.
How is it different from a relaxation massage?+
A relaxation massage uses lighter, flowing strokes to calm the nervous system. Deep tissue uses sustained, focused pressure to address specific areas of chronic tension within the muscle. The goals, techniques and intensity are quite different.
How often should I get a deep tissue massage?+
For chronic issues, every 2–4 weeks is a common starting point. Once the presenting tension has improved, monthly maintenance sessions are typical. Paul will make a personalised recommendation at your first session.
Will I be sore afterwards?+
Mild soreness in the 24–48 hours following is normal, similar to post-exercise muscle soreness. Staying hydrated and applying a warm compress helps. If soreness is significant or lasts longer, let Paul know.
Do you come to my home?+
Yes. Paul brings a professional massage table, fresh linens and everything needed. All you need is a clear space of roughly 2m × 2.5m and a comfortable room temperature.
